Are You Ready for the USB 3.0 Revolution?
|
|
|
| USB (Universal Serial Bus) is praised as one of the most important inventions during the 20th century. It is so widely accepted that you can easily find more than one USB port on nearly any computer. However, even the speed of USB 2.0 started to become insufficient to support today’s data-intensive transfers. Since the end of 2009, more and more USB 3.0 compatible peripherals were brought to the market. This next-generation USB technology is expected to replace the current USB 2.0 standard. |
Unparalleled Transfer Speeds
Expected to revolutionize data transfers, USB 3.0 achieves a maximum data rate of up to 5Gbps, which is ten times faster than USB 2.0. Thanks to its significant increase in bandwidth, the new SuperSpeed USB not only offers faster transfer speeds but allows bandwidth-hungry peripherals, like external hard drives and solid state drives (SSD), to reach their extreme performance. |
Backwards Compatibility
Since USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, your existing USB 2.0 gear will work on USB 3.0 ports and vice versa. You will not be able to maximize your bandwidth unless you are using a USB 3.0 cable with SuperSpeed devices and ports, of course, but at least plugging a 3.0 cable into a 2.0 port will be acceptable. |
Power Optimization
The enhancements to USB 3.0 are not just for higher transfer rates, but for improving the interaction between device and computer. When operating in USB 3.0 mode, about 80% more power is available for configured devices (900 mA up from 500 mA). This means that more power-hungry devices could be bus powered, and battery powered devices could charge more quickly!
