Is your portable storage device really secure?

If portable storage devices, such as USB flash drives and portable hard drives, can allow trusted employees to remove sensitive information from an organization`s premises, they can also allow intruders to do so. The impact of confidential information falling into the wrong hands due to the accidental loss of a device can be devastating and beyond repair. To prevent such a potential threat, it is necessary to protect your portable data with a modern security solution. But how?

Most popular method—AES encryption

The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), published by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2001, is one of the world`s most popular encryption algorithms that use symmetric keys for encryption and decryption. Even a supercomputer would need to spend 4.2 x10^21 years to decode a 256-bit AES key.

AES encryption is fast in both software and hardware, and requires little storage space, so it is ideal to be used to encrypt small portable storage devices such as USB flash drives. In fact, AES is the first publicly accessible and open cipher approved by the US National Security Agency (NSA) for top secret information.

Most efficient method—biometric fingerprint technology

Although it would take a supercomputer trillions of years to decode AES-256 files, it does not mean impossible. Besides, if you lose or forget your password, you may not be able to access your data or may even undergo a heavy loss in your business due to unauthorized access of your confidential data transmitted through USB flash drives.

Fortunately, biometrics technology can help. Among all the biometric techniques, fingerprint-based identification is the oldest method which has been successfully used in numerous applications. Everyone has unique and immutable fingerprints. While it’s relatively easy to copy a key or write down an alarm code and pass it along to unauthorized users, it is almost impossible to duplicate another person`s fingerprint. Your finger is your own key, and you won’t have to bother memorizing any passwords anymore!
