Demystifying the SDHC Class Ratings
| Do you have any idea what the circled numbers 2, 4, 6 or 10 printed on the front of SDHC cards mean? First of all, that little circle is actually a “C”—an abbreviation of the word “Class”—and the number inside it indicates the card’s speed class rating. The class rating is established by the Secure Digital Association (SDA) to represent the lowest possible write speed in megabytes per second that the memory card user will ever experience during operation. For example, a Class 10 SDHC card guarantees a minimum write speed of 10MB/s when used in a SDHC compatible device. The higher the class rating, the faster and more responsive the card will be. |
Purpose Influences Your Choice
Nowadays, most high-tech digital gadgets like digital cameras, digital camcorders, HDTVs, GPS and digital photo frames come with an SDHC slot, which is why high-capacity SDHC cards are divided into different classes to meet consumers’ needs.
Class 10—High-end DSLR Cameras
If you are a professional photographer who is performance minded, a Class 10 SDHC card is best suited for you. Perfectly matched for use with advanced DSLR cameras that can generate large RAW files, the Class 10 cards deliver exceptional data transfer performance that not only prevents lag when recording Full HD videos, but also enables high-speed consecutive shooting—especially at sporting or other fast-motion events.
Class 6—Mid-range Digital Cameras
If you are a prosumer equipped with an entry-level DSLR or a more sophisticated point-and-shoot camera, we strongly recommend you to choose a Class 6 SDHC memory card, which offers better speed at a comparably reasonable price. These mid-range cards can still bring pleasant photography experience, only in a more economical way.
Class 4/Class 2—Point-and-shoot Digital Cameras & Consumer Electronics
For beginners and amateur photographers whose digital cameras do not specifically emphasize on high-speed shooting feature, Class 4 SDHC cards are a great alternative. These cards are cheaper, yet still offer extremely high quality. If you are looking for a memory card that can meet your everyday shooting requirements, they will be perfect.
| Although Class 2 SDHC cards are slower, they are the cheapest. With large storage capacity and perfectly acceptable performance, these value-priced memory cards are an ideal choice for you to expand the storage space of consumer electronics, such as digital photo frames, TVs, printers and HD media players. |
