Understanding today’s most popular digital video formats

As we navigate the web, we often find ourselves drawn to interesting video clips, such as our favorite singer’s music videos, the latest movie trailers, or funny home videos on Youtube. However, digital video can be stored in many different formats, and your computer might not be able to play all of these formats properly . Learning more about the various types of video formats can help you avoid compatibility issues. Take a minute to look at Dr.T’s complete and easy-to-understand introduction to the most commonly used digital video formats today.

◎ Motion-JPEG
Most mid- to low-range digital cameras save videos in Motion JPEG format. It is commonly used despite its shortcoming with the creation of large data files. Aside from digital cameras, many digital photo frames can play Motion-JPEG encoded videos. Files stored in the Motion-JPEG format have the extension .avi or .mov.

◎ MPEG-1/MPEG-2
MPEG-1 is the format of choice for VCDs, and is very similar to MP3 files. Normal DVD files, on the other hand, are recorded using MPEG-2 to offer excellent video and audio quality. MPEG-2 is also the most commonly used format in digital television broadcasting (DVB) systems. Videos stored in the MPEG format have the extension .mpg or .mpeg.

◎ MPEG-4/AVC (H.264)
MPEG-4 (MP4) is a ubiquitous compression standard used for Internet media. Many MPEG-4 based codecs, including DivX and XviD, are popular because of their quality, speed and efficiency.

Currently, the most advanced video compression codec is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264. As the basis of most HD implementations, it is used in applications such as Blu-ray Disc, high-end digital cameras and digital camcorders.

◎ RMVB/FLV
RMVB is typically used for multimedia content like television episodes and TV shows due to its better compression ratio and support for online playback. Files using this format have the file extension ".rmvb".

Another popular video format on the Internet is Flash Video (FLV). When you upload a video to YouTube, it is transcoded into FLV format. Files downloaded from YouTube will be in FLV format as well.

◎WMV
Windows Media Video (WMV) is a compressed video compression format developed by Microsoft. Since Windows operating system comes with Windows Media Player, you will be able to run any wmv files without having to install any additional software—as long as you are a Windows user.

Please note that you might not succeed in playing any type of video on your computer unless you install corresponding decoders. Besides, if you are looking for a simple way to play your digital content on any TV in Full HD 1080p resolution, an HD media player that supports popular media formats is a perfect solution. You can simply connect a USB storage device to playback your favorite movie—in the comfort of your living room or bedroom.
